Spartan’s history
At the end of 1917, a group of independent grocers discussed forming a cooperative to create buying power for group members. In early 1918, 27 members incorporated the Grand Rapids Wholesale Grocery Company, a name it kept until 1957 when the company became Spartan Stores, Inc. In 1954, the company produced its first private-label, Spartan brand product, coffee.
Although the company changed its cooperative status to “for profit status” in the early 1970s, the publicly held company did not become publicly traded on the Nasdaq until August 2000. |
